Contextile 2014 Artistic Residency
The goal of my residency with Contextile was to incorporate the traditional embroidery of Guimarães into my work to create contemporary textile art pieces. The photographs I chose for the project include portraits of friends taken in both the US and Portugal and old family photos and antique photographs from my collection.I printed the photos on fabric using cyanotype, a process that originated in 1842 and toned them to get the final black and white images. The kind and patient experts of Guimarães embroidery at the Oficina taught me the techniques and traditions necessary to complete my project. This residency allowed me to combine my passions for alternative photography processes, embroidery and history and to work and teach in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
